I was really excited to see this.
Is it a hedge-hog, is it a wombat ?What is it? Never seen anything quite like it before, those spines look well heavy-duty defence.

Laura's right; it's a monotreme. I remember learning about these ancient egg-laying mammals in primary school, and being fascinated by them. The Echidna is related to the platypus.
